About The Performance
The past five years have been somewhat of a crazy roller coaster ride for Irish-American rocker GlenHansard. Hansard, formerly of The Frames as well as The Swell Season (with Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová) has been on the road for the better part of a decade - dropping project after project since the release of The Frames 2006 effort “The Cost”.
Hansard has worked tirelessly following the release of “The Cost” - acting in the full length film ‘Once’, dropping a number of solo EP’s, three albums with The Swell Season, and not to mention a full length solo debut LP that was a true return to form for Hansard - reintroducing him to the world through fresh sounds and shattering everyones perception of what they thought they knew about the former busker.
Although Glen’s days of hard work are far from over, he will tell you he get far more sleep these days than ever. “Ryhthm and Repose” is based upon the idea that after working so hard for so many years, one begins to realize that sleep is just as important as work - something Hansard only realized once he finally took a break.
While taking a break was the best thing for Hansard, there will certainly be no breaks tonight as his hard work and dedication has earned him a spot on one of the grandest stages he’s ever had the pleasure to grace - The Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City for ‘Live on Letterman’.
Glen rolled into New York City on a frigid winter night in support of his brand new EP, “Drive All Night”.Hansard was poised and ready to give the NYC faithful a show they won’t soon forget; and just before his performance, Glen opened up about the feeling of being inside the house The Beatles built; reminiscing on a story his mother once told him about a time in the early 60’s when she invaded the Fab 4’s dressing room in Dublin.
Shortly after, the capacity crowd filed in and Glen made his way to the stage. The Dublin native opened the show with a smooth performance of ‘Love Don't Leave Me Waiting’, off his most recent solo LP “Rhyme and Repose”. Glen then surprised fans with a brand new song called ‘Lonely Deserter’ before bringing it back to the Swell Season days of 2006 for a rendition of ‘When Your Mind's Made Up’.
Glen then performed incredible versions of ‘Bird Of Sorrow’ and ‘Low Rising’ - the second Swell Season song of the evening. Hansard then pleasantly surprised fans once again with yet another brand new song - this time being ‘Her Mercy’; a song only performed live a handful of times. Glen then returned to “Rhyme and Repose” for a stellar performance of ‘Song Of Good Hope’.
Before closing out the show, Glen treated fans to perhaps the most memorable moment of the night; a heart-wrenching performance of ‘Drive All Night’, followed by his smash hit ‘Falling Slowly’ as the last song of the evening; capping off another year of ‘Live on Letterman’ - chock full of memories to last a lifetime.
