The stars twinkled, the half moon glowed, fireflies danced above her, and she smiled contently up at them. Nights in Konoha were always beautiful, but it wasn't until just recently that she had begun to stay behind after a team practice, just to watch the scenery unfold. Now, she laid on her back, the cool grass brushing against her skin, and she felt her eyelids fall halfway as she stared at the flickering fireflies. 'They really are pretty...' She thought with a smile as she lifted one hand to catch one in her palm. Carefully, she brought her closed hand to her face and opened it up to find that the firefly was sitting in the middle of her palm, glowing brightly. The glow illuminated her face, and it showed every etch of contentment. With a small laugh, she watched as the firefly abruptly leapt off of her hand and began to fly back above her, along with the rest. Sighing happily, she placed her arms behind her head to serve as a pillow while watching them dance before her. It was sil

It was silent, if you didn't count the chirping of crickets, and she felt at ease with nature. Then, it was broken.

"...What are you doing?" Quickly, she sat up, a hand to her side pocket, and looked up to her left, only to sigh in relief.
"Oh, it's just you." He frowned at her before folding his arms.
"Why are you still here?" She blinked before smiling, motioning to the fireflies that danced around them,
"I like to watch."
"Hn. You'll catch a cold."
"It's to warm...By the way," She tore her gaze away from the fireflies, "What are you doing here, Neji?"
He blinked before looking up at the twinkling stars and the moon, "Hn. Looking for you."
"Oh? And what for?"

He just shrugged and sat down beside her, leaning back on his elbows to stare up at the fireflies. She looked at him oddly, her head tilted, for a long moment before shaking her head with a smile. She tilted her head up in the direction of the fireflies as well, and hugged her knees. There was a comfortable silence, which crickets would break every once in a while, and the two exchanged quick glances at each other from time to time. They both watched as one lone firefly flew away from the group, and she smiled when it started to fly in front of her before landing on the tip of her nose. She tried to hold in a laugh, in fear of it flying away, and she slowly turned her head to him, showing off her newest accessory. He raised an eyebrow before his eyes gave off an amused sparkle. She smiled and shook her head lightly, causing the firefly to jump off of her nose and whiz back into the sky.

"So...Why were you looking for me?" She asked again after a few minutes of silence. She kept her gaze on the stars, but she heard him shift around.
"...To give you this." She looked over at him to see that he was holding out a very small, wrapped box to her. Blinking, she took it in her hands and stared at it,
"Thank you..." The wrapping paper was beautiful; it was a deep red and was decorated with intertwining dragons. She just admired the box for a few moments before he scowled at her,
"Open it."
"Oh! Right." She said with a small laugh, tearing the wrapping paper to reveal a small, white box. She raised an eyebrow at him before opening the box, gasping at what laid delicately inside.
"...Gai told me it was your birthday." He said placidly as she stared at the item within the box.
"Oh...It's beautiful." She whispered, taking out the bracelet. It was gold, real or fake she didn't know (nor did she care), and multiple charms hung off of it delicately. There was a dragon, a kunai knife, a scroll, and...
"'HN'? What does that stand for? Your favorite phrase?" She added with a tease, touching the charm carefully. He gazed at the charm bracelet before looking over at her,
"Hyuuga Neji."
"Oh..." There was a moment of silence, in which he gazed at her with an anxious look, while she smiled down at the bracelet. It wasn't until she felt his eyes on her that she realized what he had just said. "OH!" She exclaimed, flustered as she looked down at him. "Your name...On my bracelet...Oh..."
"You can take it off, if you want to."
"No!" Her tone was quick and sharp, and immediately restated the exclamation while he looked at her oddly, "I mean, no, it's beautiful...Thank you, very much..."
"Why didn't you tell me it was your birthday?" He asked, sitting up. She blinked before looking down at the bracelet, fumbling with it in her hands.

"Oh, you know...I guess I just forgot." He stared at her for a moment, and she shuddered; she knew how his eyes could see everything and it chilled her. There was a heavy silence, in which she stared at the bracelet in her hands, her fingers trailing over it, her cheeks still a light pink. He had turned his gaze away from her and onto his own hands, eyes narrowed and brow furrowed. Crickets chirped, fireflies danced, and the moon glowed while the two sat in silence, each unsure (but of course not showing it) on what to do.
"...I want you on all of my missions."
She blinked in surprise and hastily snapped her head back to him, "What?" He looked over at her coolly, eyes set.
"I want you to be on every mission that I'm on." She fumbled over words, "But, what...Huh?"
He rolled his eyes, "I need you."
She scrambled up to her feet, while he calmly stood. She blinked at him, clutching the bracelet to her chest, "Neji, I don't think you know what you're saying..."
"Tenten, I need you on missions. I want you to be on all of them." There was a silence as fireflies danced above their heads, and he raised an eyebrow as he watched the glow from them illuminate every etch of confusion on her face. "Do you not understand?" He asked placidly, and she looked away.
"I do...You need me to protect your blind spot...Right?" He blinked; what had she thought he needed her for?
"Yes. If you protect my blind spot, I'll protect you." Why did she look so disappointed? She smiled.
"Okay, no problem. Your blind spot is as good as gone with me there."
"You realize that I'll have to have you with me at all times?"
"Sure."
"Even in dangerous situations?"

"Are you underestimating me, Hyuuga Neji?" She asked with a slight tease, still smiling. He blinked again; what was wrong with her smile? He watched as she subconsciously touched the charm of his initials, almost as if she was caressing it. Realization hit him like a bucket of cold water, and he tried not to gasp for air. Instead, he gave her a half-smile, a rare feat indeed.
"I couldn't if I tried."

Every mission was spent together, and each one was executed perfectly. The two were the living examples of Ying and Yang, darkness and light, and all other comparisons. Without her, his blind spot would be used to his disadvantage. Without him, she was an open target.
They still set out childish games to hone their skills; like playing tag, only with explosive notes. Or playing hide-and-seek, only using a time limit and kunai knives. And every night, after ruthless training and missions, they still found time to find the fireflies. And every night, they would watch.
"...Thank you."
She glanced over at him with a smile, "For what?" His brow furrowed before looking at her, pearl white staring into hazel brown.
"For agreeing to stay with me." She tilted her head and gave a small, blissful laugh.
"That's what friends do." He blinked; what had she said? Friends? What did that mean? That the feelings he thought she had for him were not true? Well, it would ease his troubles if that statement were true. It would have, if it had been true earlier. Now, the possible fact felt like ice traveling down his back and, inwardly, he flinched. No, with her, he did not like the term "friends".
"I need you." He was facing her completely now, staring as she caught a firefly in the palm of her hand. He saw how her smile faltered before she gave a wistful one.
"I know. I'll protect your blind spot..."
"I could care less about my blind spot." She paused for a moment, before glancing over at him before trying again.
"You need me as a partner. I know."
"I don't want you as a mere partner." He said lowly, his voice getting husky. She furrowed her brow.

"Then what do you need me for?" He scooted closer, and placed a hand over her open one, capturing the firefly in his hand. Carefully, he threw it back into the sky, where it buzzed back to its pack, their glows casting both of them in calm lights. She narrowed her eyes at him, trying to analyze what he was doing, like she could in missions, but she couldn't. However, when he lowered his head towards hers, her eyes widened. He grabbed onto her right forearm firmly, using his other hand to cup her cheek somewhat roughly.
They stared at each other, her chocolate eyes finally staring into his white ones, and she felt her insides melt. Fireflies danced between them, illuminating the determination in his face, and the affection in hers. He knew that his hands probably felt rough against her smooth skin, but he didn't let go of her chin. He didn't like how unsure he felt; he always knew what he was doing, but now...
To hell with it.
He was about to speak, but she got to it before him.
"I love you."
He just stared before crashing her body against his chest, his arms tightly around hers. She inhaled his scent before burying her head into his shoulder. There was a long silence, in which she watched the fireflies from his shoulder. She knew he wouldn't say it, he couldn't. But, it was alright. She knew that he did, too.
"...I need you." He said carefully, almost timidly, into her ear, and she smiled; he had been saying it all along. Just in a different form.
"I need you too, Neji..."
