The last heat produced upset but no upset: Guy, Worlds silver medallist is out – 27th in 3:52.91. He raced with a beard, in briefs and emerged panting. Here was a man still doing double threshold sessions and heading from the heats to a 5km training set. Unhurried and worried, Guy’s intent was clear as he told SwimVortex: “I’m focussing on myself … all the main guys heading to Rio are working for that. I felt ok to about 200 but at 250 I started to feel a bit sick.” The outcome of the 400m today was part of a test of character: what if the start at Rio 2016 doesn’t go as well as planned. How will he respond? Guy noted that he now had a few days of easier workouts than he’s endured in the past week and looked forward to being a touch sharper in the 200m, the event in which he claimed the world title last year.
